Obituary for Jay I. Rambeck
Jay Irving Rambeck, 94, of Harbor, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2015, at a local nursing facility. Jay was born June 5, 1920, on the family farm near Reynolds, North Dakota, to Irving Carlyle and Ester Weigle Rambeck. Following school, Jay worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1941. The Army sent Jay to airplane mechanics school in Texas and later posted him in Seattle, Washington. He married Agnes Martha Kassa April 26, 1943, in Seattle. Jay was then sent to the European Theater where he was assigned as mechanic to artillery battalion spotter aircraft. During this time Jay learned to fly, which became a great joy during his lifetime. Following his discharge in 1945, Jay and Agnes settled in Myrtle Creek, where he was employed as a millworker. The family moved to Brookings in 1954, when Jay bought an original share in the Brookings Plywood Corporation. He worked for Brook-Ply until he retired in 1985. Jay was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker. He built three homes, and crafted everything from cutting boards to furniture. Jay’s wife, Agnes, died in 1982. Jay began to travel. He visited Australia, the Orient and Polynesia. He married Marian Mills Hanscam in 1988. He and Marian traveled to all of the continents — from Antarctica to Africa, Europe to the Andes and more. Travel was a great pleasure of which he never tired. He was a man of strength and endurance. He set a high standard of character and accomplishment, and will be missed by his family and friends. Jay was preceded in death by his first wife Agnes; parents Irving and Ester Rambeck; brothers Allen and David; sister Norma Spritzer; son Kim Ross Rambeck. Survivors include his wife Marian of Harbor; sons Vincent of Portland, Larry of Harbor; daughters Mary (Lynn) Cook of Grand Ronde and Donna (Wilbur) Andreson of Gold Beach; stepsons Norman Hanscam of Harbor and Michael Hanscam of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren Angela Rambeck of Eugene, Christopher Cook of Grand Ronde, Jason (Genie) Cook of Vancouver, Washington; great-grandchild Evelyn Cook; brother Vincent Rambeck of Hensel, North Dakota; sister Donna Bravick of Stevens, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today (March 28); recitation of the Rosary to precede the Mass at 1 p.m. at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Road, Brookings. Father Luan Nguyen will officiate. Burial at W.J. Ward Cemetery; reception to follow at the parish hall.
