Jane I. Hayashi passed away unexpectedly on August 18, 2022 at her home in Brookings,
Oregon. She was 74.
Jane was born in North Bend, Oregon on March 3, 1948 to Bob and Betty Nowlin. Her father
became a fisherman when the industry was just developing in the small village town of Port
Orford, OR. There Jane grew up where everyone knew everyone.
Shortly after high school she moved down to the San Francisco Bay Area with some friends to
experience the bright lights of the city. She could not believe that after getting off the plane in
San Francisco and driving to Sunnyvale that it was just all lights for the whole distance. In
Sunnyvale she met and married Richard Hayashi.
Jane lived for her kids. She was always there for them for their formative years doing whatever
was needed, including school, dance, T-ball, soccer. She worked a variety of jobs both before
and after the kids. Her favorite was building acoustic transducers for a variety of applications
including ultrasound imaging. Here she learned how to operate lathes as well as grinding and
polishing equipment. It was really precise work some of which had to be completed under a
microscope. Jane was a skilled seamstress and quilter. She made dance costumes for competition
kids groups as well as wedding and bridesmaid dresses.
Jane is survived by her husband, Richard Hayashi of Brookings, OR; son, Doi Hayashi of San
Jose, CA; daughter, Sumiko Poust (Ben) of Hawthorne, CA; sister, Cheri Hatmaker of Tigard,
OR; brother, Jack Nowlin of Warrenton, OR; sister, Vickie Nowlin of Port Orford, OR.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 PM on October 15 the at the Chetco Grange Community
Center in Harbor.
