Obituary for Ina Beth Watson MacQuiddy
(Ina) Beth Watson MacQuiddy, 83, of Brookings, died January 26, 2014, of natural causes. She was born March 2, 1930, in Monterey, California to Oliver Logan Watson and Veva Currie Watson. She grew up in Pacific Grove, California graduating from Pacific Grove High School in 1947. After graduating from high school she attended San Jose State University and earned a bachelor of arts degree in Journalism in 1951. She married Richard “Dick” Henry MacQuiddy Dec. 2, 1951, in Carmel, California. In 1954 they moved to San Jose, California, where they lived for the next 45 years. Beth was active in Junior Women’s Club and Val League, organizations that raised funds for local charities. She and Dick were also active in the Methodist Church, providing leadership for the high school youth. After her children were raised, she went to work for Stanford University and eventually for IBM as an administrative assistant in the research department. The couple enjoyed traveling together, exploring the continental United States with their fifth-wheeler and enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the South Pacific, China, England and Italy. They moved to Brookings in 1999 to be near their daughter and her family. They loved living in a small town and having a home on the coastline with a view of the ocean. Beth was a past-president of the Brookings Emblem Club, and was active in the Brookings Newcomers Welcoming Club and the Elks Ramblin’ RVers. She was an active member of the Brookings Nazarene church and loved spending time with her many friends in the community. Survivors include daughter Marjorie Towers of Brookings; grandson Scott MacQuiddy of Sacramento; granddaughter Jennifer MacQuiddy of Pine City, Minn.; and granddaughter Allison Rice of Portland. Also surviving are 4 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sons John and Tommy, and her son-in-law Brad Towers. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, February 8, 10:00 a.m. at Brookings Nazarene.
