Henrietta “Marie” Simmons, 97, of Brookings, passed away in Crescent City, Calif. on August 7, 2013. Marie, as family and friends knew her, was born July 20, 1916 in Covelo, Calif., one of seven children to Henry and Mary Ann (Steele) Smith. She grew up there and in Los Molinos. Marie married Homer Simmons in 1953; the couple moved to Brookings in 1958. Marie was a homemaker and loved to take care of her flowers, especially roses and African violets. She also enjoyed knitting and doing ceramics. Marie was active in and taught Sunday school at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Brookings for many years. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harley and Lichelle Simmonds of Brookings, grandchildren Lisa Simmonds, Kyle Simmonds and his wife, Annie, and Matthew Simmonds, sister, Gloria Machon of Redding, Calif., numerous nieces and nephews including Laverne Clements, Josh Clements and Joyce Scott. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Homer, in 1991, sister, Esther, Lola and Janice, brothers, Richard and Harley. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Rd. in Eagle Point, Ore. where Marie will be laid to rest with her husband. Pastor Adrian Van Aswegen will officiate. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
