Obituary for Heinz "Ed" Salomon
Heinz “Ed” Salomon passed away at a local care facility on Oct. 7, 2013 at the age of 85. He was born Feb. 23, 1928 to Franz Salomon and Ella (Hornig-Salomon) in Manhattan, New York. He attended schools both in New York and Denver, Colo. After graduating high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving two years in Pensacola, Florida, where he learned the art of photography. Returning to Denver, he met and married his wife, Joan Marie Haeffner, on Oct. 9, 1948. Ed was later recalled to service during the Korean War. Ed served on the U.S.S. Antietam air craft carrier. He then remained as a reservist until retiring in 1978. He was also a Denver firefighter for 27 years, retiring as captain in 1980. He and his wife purchased an RV and traveled the west coast from San Diego, Calif., to Port Angeles, Wash. They decided to make picturesque Harbor, Ore., their home. Ed was a man of many talents. He could take apart and put back together almost anything. He was a builder, an inventor (making many of his own tools), a thinker and a wonderful chef. You could talk about any subject because he was always interested in learning more. He was enthusiastic about fishing, golfing and his family. Ed is survived by his wife, Joan; his daughter Kathie Weisenstein of Brookings; his grandchildren, Eric Weisensten and wife Melissa of Denver, Colo., and Kama Hedding and her husband John of Ashland, Ore.; and one great-grandchild, Alexander Hedding. Ed is preceded in death by his son, Gary Salomon. Memorial contributions in Ed’s honor may be made to Curry Village Good Samaritan Society, 1 Park Ave., Brookings, OR 97415.
