Obituary for Hattie L. Haughawout
Hattie L. (Cooper) Wilson Haughawout May 17, 1915 - Dec. 26, 2009 Hattie L. Wilson Haughawout passed away in Gold Beach on Saturday, December 26, 2009 at the age of 94. Hattie was born May 17, 1915 in Roseburg, Ore. to Minor and Etta (French) Cooper. She grew up there graduating from Roseburg High School. While in school she began taking music lessons and developed what would be a lifelong love of music. Hattie moved to and worked in Myrtle Point where she met Ira Wilson . The two would fall in love and marry on October 14, 1938 in Klamath Falls. They moved to Gold Beach in 1939 and started a Union Oil service station and bulk oil plant. They expanded into the tire business in 1948 opening a Firestone Tire store. Hattie did all of the bookkeeping for the business until Ira's retirement in 1962. She then went to work as a secretary for the Curry County Commissioner's Office for 6 years. Ira passed away in 1971. In 1974 Hattie married Dr. Lefford Haughawout of Coos Bay . They moved to North Bend where Lefford passed away in 1987. For over 60 years Hattie was active with the Order of the Eastern Star in Curry and Coos counties, various Grange's and the Gold Beach Presbyterian Church playing piano and organ. Hattie moved back to Gold Beach in 2007 to be near her son Allen and his wife, Terry. Throughout her life she enjoyed her family, friends, playing the piano, doing genealogy research and traveling. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Allen Wilson and Terry Andrews of Gold Beach, sister, Elizabeth Quanstrom of Portland, stepson, Ernie Wilson of Brookings. In addition to her first and second husbands, Hattie was preceded in death by her son, Bruce Wilson and brother-in-law, Harry Quanstrom. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Curry County Home Health & Hospice, PO Box 382, Gold Beach, OR 97444. Hattie was laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Rogue River Cemetery in Gold Beach. A memorial service will be held at the Gold Beach Presbyterian Church Saturday 1/16/2010, at 2:00 p.m.
