Obituary for Harry Dale Mattison
Harry Dale Mattison, 92, of Brookings, Oregon, died December 15, 2010 at Sea View. He was born July 16, 1918 in the maternity hospital in Sioux City, Iowa; the son of Harry and Gladys Douthitt Mattison of Ponca, Nebraska. He lived and grew up in the Ponca, Nebraska area, living on the family farm, attending schools there and graduating from Ponca High School in May of 1935. He then attended Wayne State College in Nebraska for one year, then attending the “College of Mortuary Science” in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 1938. Following graduation he served a two year apprenticeship at a Mortuary in Ogden, Utah, after which he became a licensed Embalmer and Funeral Director in Utah. While attending Wayne State College in Nebraska, he met his future wife, Lois Marion Schjolberg. They were married June 10, 1940, (after his apprenticeship) in the “Little Brown Church” in Nashua, Iowa. They then lived in Ogden, Utah until he entered the Army Air Corps in January 1944. After WWII ended he returned to Nebraska and joined a brother in the operation of a John Deere Implement business for six years. In December 1952 they moved to southern California where he worked in defense industries (Marquardt Corp, Litton Industries) until 1965 when he and Lois purchased a Western Auto franchise in Oxnard, California which they owned and operated for 15 years, 1965 to 1980. After several trips to the northwest, Oregon especially, they decided to move to the Brookings area, which they did in May of 1985. During some of the years in Brookings he was active in Lutheran Brotherhood projects and events. Also a sometimes hobby was making bird houses, having made more than 200, selling some and giving away many. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 20 years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge (Nebraska) for 64 years, and a member of the Harbor Water PUD (Secretary). Survivors are his wife Lois of Brookings (having been married 70 years), one son Jeffrey and his wife Marlene, of McKinleyville, CA, two daughters, Janice and her husband Jeff Hackel, of Crestline, CA and Merry Citarella, of Carlsbad, CA, three grandchildren, Kristine Citarella and Colin and Jill Mattison He was preceded in death by four brothers; Fay, Max, Ross and George. After cremation a memorial service will be held at SeaView Senior Living Community, Brookings, OR., in late January 2011. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Outreach Gospel Mission, Brookings, OR, or the Masonic/Eastern Star Home for Children in Fremont Nebraska, (2415 North Main, Fremont NE 68025).
