Obituary for Grace A. Kirkland
Grace A. (Lankford) Kirkland Sept. 17, 1913 - May 27, 2010 Grace A. Kirkland passed away at her home in Harbor, Ore. on Thursday, May 27, 2010. She was 96. Grace was born September 17, 1913 in Custer, Ark. to Albert and Mary (Holstine) Lankford. She grew up and attended school in Gamaliel, Arkansas. Grace married Cleo Kirkland on November 11, 1929; the couple then moved to Missouri. After beginning a family, she and Cleo opened a restaurant in Lebanon, MO. They later moved to Tulsa, OK before moving west to California. She and Cleo opened a second restaurant in San Pedro, CA. After that Grace began what would be a 20 year career with Sears first in the hats and handbags department in Long Beach and later as lingerie division manager in Torrance, CA. Following retirement she and Cleo became full time RVers until permanently settling in Brookings 32 years ago. Grace loved crafts, crocheting, knitting and collecting driftwood and agates. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Norma Jean Shaw of Kettle Falls, WA, sons, Bob Kirkland of Brookings and Darrell Kirkland and his wife, Barbara of Indianapolis, IN, eleven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and fourteen great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by her husband of 80 years on January 2nd of this year. In addition to Cleo, she was preceded in death by son-in-law, Albert Shaw; Daughter-in-law, Karen Kirkland; her brothers, Herb, Grover, Joe, Floyd and Paul and sisters, Willie, Jessie and one infant sister. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Curry County Hospice, PO Box 382, Gold Beach, OR 97444 or to a charity of the donor's choice. Viewing will be at Redwood Memorial Chapel on Sunday, May 30, 2010 from 2 to 4pm. A funeral service will be held at Redwood Memorial Chapel on Monday, May 31, 2010 at 11:00am with Michael Wilk officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Driftwood Estates Recreation Hall. Private interment will be at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery.
