Obituary for "Gordy"
Dr. Gordon (Gordy) Myrah, a Lutheran minister and 42-year resident of Brookings, Oregon, died unexpectedly on June 30, 2022 at the age of 74 at his home in Brookings.
Gordy was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on June 28, 1948. He graduated from Sun Prairie High School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in 1966, where he was senior class president. He went on to the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, where he met Diane McKeith and majored in Biology. In 1971, he married Diane and they then went on to Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, where he graduated in 1975 as student body president. After ordination, he went on to serve Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Cathlamet, Washington for five years. They then moved to Brookings in 1980 where he became the minister of Trinity Lutheran Church. In 1994, he received his Doctor of Ministry Degree at Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The focus of his study was archeology relating to the life and times of Jesus. During his four year study, he traveled to Israel where he worked on underwater archeology.
Gordy had a great passion for service and was active in the local community, including: Chetco Federal Credit Union where he served on the board for 23 years; he helped form the Brookings Harbor Food Bank, where he served as chairman for 19 years; the Winchuck Fire Department as a volunteer fireman; he was co-announcer for the Azalea Parade from 1984-2007; after retirement he was a volunteer at the Curry County Sherriff’s Department; and he was involved in various other activities and organizations throughout the community. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and travel.
As the minister of Trinity Lutheran Church he often said he “served 31 years to the glory of God,” and he oversaw countless weddings, baptisms, funerals and confirmations. He was instrumental in building the new sanctuary at the church in 2003. Many local ministers respected him and loved him as a friend.
He was proceeded in death by his father, Gordon and his daughter Sarah. He is survived by his mother Norma Motl of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; his wife Diane; his daughter Dawn Myrah and her husband Paul Keady of Portland; his daughter Amy Gleason and her husband Mark of Brookings; five grandchildren, Grace Keady, Hayden Keady, Anna Gleason, Andrew Gleason and Aubrey Gleason; one brother Gary Myrah and his wife Lisa; many nieces and nephews; and his loving Labrador Retriever, Molly.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1200 Easy Street, Brookings. Those who wish to remember Gordy in a special way may make donations in his name to Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church or the Southern Oregon Humane Society.
