Obituary for Gordon B. Porter Jr.
Gordon B. Porter, Jr. of Brookings, Ore., passed away at his home on June 8, 2014. He was 79 years old. Gordon was born Dec. 1, 1934 in Denver, Colo., to Gordon and Louise (Phillips) Porter. He joined the U.S. Army in 1957, where he served honorably for three years. He worked at IBM for 25+ years. After his service in the Army, Gordon spent time racing cars. He raced on Pike’s Peak in Colorado. He built and raced cars in Georgetown, Colo. and Mt. McLellan, Colo. He also raced Midget cars in 1956 and 1957 at Englewood Speedway and Lakeside Speedway in Colorado. In addition to racing, Gordon enjoyed his time behind the wheel when he drove the equipment truck on his daughter Alice’s bicentennial tour through New York with her music group Celebration in 1976. Gordon also enjoyed working on his many Volkswagens. He also enjoyed fishing in both Oregon and Colorado. Gordon is survived by his daughter and her husband, Alice and Larry Thompson of Henderson, Nev.; daughter Terri Little of Denver, Colo.; stepson Mike Rogers; stepson Rick Alland; cousins Mae Bel Powell and Ruth Scheele; grandchildren Jessica Freeman and her husband Prentice, Katie Thompson, Melinda Little, Jennifer Little, and Alicia Lenox; seven great-grandchildren; and he was blessed with multitudes of great friends and wonderful neighbors. He is preceded in death by his beloved cat Charlie. A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 12 at 2 p.m. at Olinger Crown Hill Cemetery, 7777 W. 29th Ave., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
