Obituary for Gerrid C Joy
Gerrid Joy was born in Hollywood, California and passed away at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Oregon. Gerrid attended Dorsey High School in Los Angeles and was accepted into the University of Southern California (USC). In 1958, he was the youngest graduate of the College of Dentistry at USC. He began his practice in Newport Beach, California and then moving to Northern California in 1970. He purchased Salmon Harbor Resort in Smith River, CA and also built a dental office to continue his practice. Gerrid recently retired from Pelican Bay State Prison after practicing dentistry for over 50 years. His love for dentistry was combined with his love of creating. He became involved in real estate because he enjoyed the challenge of taking an existing structure and making it better. He had a strong sense of design and could visualize what the finished project would look like before it was ever started. He enjoyed making the community better as he has refurbished and renovated many buildings in Brookings. Gerrid loved his community and had many friends. He was one of those rare people that when counting his close friends, he could easily use up all his fingers and toes. He loved people and he loved to laugh and enjoy the simple pleasures of friendship. He loved classic cars and loved to travel. He spent his entire life as close to the ocean as he could get. He enjoyed fishing and boating as well as enjoying a glass of wine watching the sunset over the water. Gerrid was a life member of the Brookings Elks Lodge #1934 where he enjoyed the brotherhood for over 45 years. Gerrid is survived by his beloved, Alice Phillips and his children Jeff, Linda, Daren, Gerrid R., Annabelle and seven grandchildren. Services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at 2:00pm at the Elks Lodge, 800 Elk Dr., Brookings. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made “In Memory of Gerrid Joy” to the Elks #1934, PO Box 5000, Brookings, OR 97415.
