Obituary for Georgia "Hazel" Austin
Georgia “Hazel” Weeber Austin, 100, of Brookings, OR passed away on September 13, 2014. Hazel was born on April 22, 1914 in Arkansas to Samuel and Cleo Gregg. As a child she lived in Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. She married Herbert F. Weeber in November of 1930 in California. They had one son, Raymond Weeber. Together Hazel and Herbert owned and operated a resturant in Lake Anderson, CA. In 1972, the family moved to Brookings. In Oregon, Hazel continued her work in the restaurant business, opening a restaurant called Le French Dip, with her dear friend Dee Barnhardt. Hazel married her second husband Luther D. Austin in November of 1989. They had many happy years together until Luther passed on in 2002. Hazel was instrumental in the forming of the Chetco Senior Center and in development of the present site. She was president for the first three years. She also developed a boutique in the Center, which helped finance its growth. She continued to be active in the Center for many years. Hazel was known throughout Brookings at “ The Hat Lady” as she was seldom seen without her trademark hat; a trademark she continued right to the last day. Hazel is survived by her son Raymond Weeber, his wife, and daughters of Drancy, France; A stepson, David Austin of Felton, California; A granddaughter Amy Austin-Hanson (James) of San Jose, CA, and niece Kathy Gregg of Waldport, Oregon; as well as several great grandchildren. Hazel was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt and Friend.
