Obituary for George R. Elsom, Sr.
George Elsom, Sr. passed away quietly at home with his family at his side on August 29. He was a wonderful husband of 54 years to his wife, Deanna, and a loving father to his two children, George, jr. and Tammy Beckley. He was a grandfather who enjoyed having fun with his four grandchildren, Abby and John Beckley and Kaylee and Austin Elsom. He was known as “Boom” to his grandchildren and many around him. His son, George, and wife, Monica and two children, Kaylee and Austin, live in Bend. His daughter, Tammy Beckley, lives in Lake Oswego with her son, John Beckley. Tammy’s daughter, Abby Beckley, is serving in Americorps currently in Maine. Son-in-law Tim Beckley lives in Brookings. George served in the Marine Reserves and later was active in the US Navy holding an NSA Security Clearance serving on two aircraft carriers on the Admiral’s staff. After living in the San Francisco Bay Area and working for Computer Sciences Corporation, he and his family spent two years in South Africa in their employ. Later, the family returned to Oregon and George served at the pleasure of Governor Vic Atiyeh as an Assistant Director for the Department of Human Services. Changing careers later on, he retired from the State Department of Corrections in 1995. He and his wife, Deanna, moved to Brookings in 1997 and loved to travel the world together. They biked 500 miles each year in the Palm Desert area in a few months. George loved serving his church and he and Deanna loved teaching art appreciation to 4th graders at Kalmiopsis Elementary for 12 years. George loved teaching and so enjoyed the students and wonderful staff. There will be no service. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. In remembrance, donations may be made to the 4th grade classes at Kalmiopsis Elementary School, 629 Easy Street, Brookings, OR 97415, for equipment, supplies and art classes. Condolence may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
