Obituary for Froy Lee Watson
Froy Lee Watson, Jr. November 19, 1938-- May 24, 2015 Froy Lee Watson, Jr., 76, passed away May 24 at home after a two year illness in Brookings. Born on November 19, 1938 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Froy Watson Sr. and Beulah Torgerson, the eldest of four children. In 1963 he married Frances Woehl and together they produced daughter, Christine. Froy lovingly referred to Fran and Christine as "Two of the best things I've done." They lived in Pleasanton, California for many years before moving to Brookings, Oregon in 1998. An adventurous man of boundless energy, he was an avid outdoors-man who had an encyclopedic knowledge on a vast array of subjects. His knowledge was freely shared and he love nothing more than to encourage inquisitiveness in young people. Fishing, hunting, boating were only some of his many passions. He loved baseball, softball and basketball. At mid-life he channeled his interest in playing sports into a passion for coaching and officiating from Little League to college. A dedicated working man, Froy got his first job at 12 years old and was never without a job at any time until he retired in 1998 from a career in cartography with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, CA. After high school graduation he joined the Army, spending 2 years in Japan which influenced many parts of his life, especially regarding gardening and cooking. He mastered the art and grew a beautiful collection of Bonsai. Froy was involved in his community. He belonged to local Fishing, Bonsai, and Mushroom Clubs and spent many hours working with the Brookings-Harbor Garden Club at the Botanical Garden. He also volunteered for community clean-up events. He will be remembered for his kind, gentle, nurturing nature, which made him not only a good coach but also a wonderful husband, father, and friend. A glass of fine wine (some he helped produce at a family member's vineyard), and some good conversation full of wit, wisdom and tales of adventure was an event he always enjoyed. More than anything else he loved his family. Even before it was a popular concept Froy was a big supporter of women's rights and equality. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 53 years, Fran Watson; his daughter Christine Watson; and many friends and family who miss him dearly. A tribute is planned for June 18 at Harbor Fire Hall, W Benham Ln. RSPV by June 12, watfran@frontier.com. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his memory to your favorite cause or to the Botanical Garden, Brookings-Harbor Garden Club, PO Box 7588, Brookings, OR 97415
