Obituary for Frederick "Gene" Reiling
Frederick “Gene” Reiling Feb. 14, 1931 – Oct. 5, 2016
Longtime Brookings-Harbor resident and former Harbor Post Office Postmaster Frederick “Gene” Reiling, 85, passed away October 5, 2016 at his home.
Gene was born Feb. 14, 1931 in Klamath Falls to Fred and Marguerite Anderson Reiling. He graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School in 1949 and played basketball for the Bruins. He joined the US Army and served in Korea. He returned permanently to Brookings in 1959 with his wife Helen Payne Reiling, who was his high school sweetheart.
Gene believed Brookings was his "heaven on earth" and was invested in what happened to the community. He was a long-time supporter of the Bruins, a member of Brookings Elks Lodge #1934, American Legion, and held several leadership positions in the VFW. He also was an active Red Cross donor having accumulated 56 units given over the years.
Gene was best known for his work at the Harbor Post Office. He offered gracious service and the conversation was always pleasant.
Survivors include Rick and Debra Reiling of Harbor, Herb and Carol Arlandson of Grants Pass, Jonna and John Weeks of Salem. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by Helen, his wife of 42 years, and a daughter Nina. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Brookings Elks Lodge 1934, 800 Elk Drive, Brookings. Refreshments will follow. Private interment will take place at WJ Ward Memorial Cemetery, Brookings. Memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
