Obituary for Fred Baumgartner
Fred Baumgartner passed away Friday night August 9th at his long time home up the Chetco River. A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, August 15th at Redwood Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 16th at Brookings Church of Christ, 17222 Passley Rd., with Michael Wilk officiating. A finger food potluck reception will follow at 3:30 P.M. at the family home; 99616 N. Bank Chetco River Rd. Fred was born Dec. 7, 1921 and was a lifelong resident of Brookings. During WWII, Fred served 3 ½ years as a U.S. Navy Pharmacist Mate First Class and fought in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam, attached to the 3rd Marine Division in Company E, Third Medical Battalion. Following his military service, Fred worked long and hard hours as a timber faller and commercial fisherman. He loved hunting and fishing; and helping others, especially seniors. Fred will be missed by everyone who has known him over the years. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Rosie; daughter Susan Smith and husband Jim of The Dalles, OR; son Fred Owen Baumgartner and wife Cathie of Elko, NV; sisters Marie Musser of Brookings; and Louise Looke of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Jimmy, Darci, Julie, Jesse, Eileen, Jeff, Greg, and Alison; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by brother Nick Baumgartner; and sisters Alvina Ripley and Freeda Kemnitzer.
