Obituary for Frank Edward Johnstone, IV
Frank Edward Johnstone IV, 62, died October 27, 2011, at Home Sweet Home Hospice in Brookings of natural causes. His older sister, Carol, was in attendance. Frank was born November 20, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois to Joan Hamerstrom Hawley and Frank Edward Johnstone III. He graduated from San Francisco City College and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Photography at San Francisco State University in 1978. He was a brilliant photographer taking and developing mostly black and white photos. Another passion was sailing. The photograph shows him on his boat Lissi (named after his Scottish Terrier). After University he served for several years as a policeman for the San Francisco Transit Authority, a service for which he was justifiably proud. He lived in San Francisco, with his mother, Joan Hawley, before moving with her to Brookings in the late 80s, where they renovated their home on Moore St. He was especially proud of the conversion of the garage into a guest room and bar where he could showcase his collection of antique doorknobs, hinges, and keyholes, which he mounted on exotic woods. His most enjoyable memories were travelling to all the 50 states (including Alaska and Hawaii) with his mother. Frank had a keen interest in all things Star Trek, not to mention aliens and site 51 in Nevada. He was an expert at Jeopardy and the Price is Right. After his mother died in 2005, he lived at Driftwood Lodge in Gold Beach where he was able to share his interests and quirky humor with his companions, friends, and staff. Survivors include his sister, Carol C. Johnstone of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and her children Zebediah Stahl and Kate Bouret, who also live in Halifax, and Stan Schroeder, his wife Kristin and daughter Sarah, who live in Crestline, California. A memorial was held on November 3, in Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park in California with his friends and companions from Driftwood Lodge, officiated by his sister, Carol Johnstone, in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition. Cremation under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory, Brookings.
