Obituary for Florence J. Flavin
Florence J. Flavin passed away in a local care facility in Brookings on January 29, 2011. She was 87. Florence was born April 4, 1923 in Hancock, MI to Arthur and Mary (Lundy) Kelli. After graduating in 1941 she moved to the Detroit area where she worked as a typist in a factory during World War II. She married Robert Flavin on March 1, 1946 in Napoleon, OH. They made their home in Michigan, where they raised two daughters. After retirement they traveled across the U.S., seeing most of the country and living for a few years in southern Colorado, where they enjoyed camping and fishing. By 1979 they were ready for a milder climate, and moved to Brookings. Florence was an excellent swimmer, cook and knitter; she loved being with family and friends, beachcombing, barbeques, cards and garage sales. She adored animals, especially her “grand-dogs”, Carlos, Finn and Moe, who always made her smile. Survivors include her daughters, Susan Flavin and her husband, Jerry Thompson of Brookings, Karen Fairman and her husband, Jeremy of Brookings, sister, Lillian Line of Gainesville, FL.; several nieces and nephews; and dear friend Frances Reller of Belgrade, MT. Florence was preceded in death by her husband, a twin brother, John Kelly and her sister, Katherine Chiriboga. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pennies for Pooches, PO Box 648, Gold Beach, OR 97444. At her request, no public ceremony will be held.
