Obituary for Eugene Victor Hance
Eugene Victor Hance December 20, 1920 - April 26, 2010 Eugene Victor "Gene" Hance, 89, passed away Monday April 26, 2010 of cancer. He was born December 20, 1920 in Turlock, California. Gene and his siblings were raised single-handedly by his beloved Mother Pearl (Hance) Sullivan during the Great Depression. Gene was the third son and last survivor of five brothers and one sister. Gene is survived by his wife of 25 years and high school sweetheart Maxine (Bliss) Hance, his son Harold E. Hance of Colorado, his grandsons John E. Hance of Colorado and David G. Hance of Oregon as well as three great grandchildren, his stepdaughter Jaci Eskridge, two step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In his youth, Gene was a talented athlete and baseball enthusiast. He was also a gifted wood craftsman. He was a self-made businessman who made his fortune in construction and real estate. He serves as an example to his family and friends as someone who began with nothing and made a success of his life through pure hard work and relentless determination. Not content to simply sit on his hard-earned money, Gene was well known for helping those in need. Gene spent a large part of his adult life in Fort Bragg, California. He and Maxine moved to Brookings in 1990. While here he made many new friends and business acquaintances. Gene was a gardener at heart and shared much of his garden produce with his friends and neighbors. He was respected and loved by all. A celebration of Gene's life will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Brookings-Harbor Christian Church, 555 Barbra Lane, Brookings, Oregon. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Curry County Home Health and Hospice at PO Box 382, Gold Beach, OR 97444. They took such splendid care of Gene during his last few weeks.
