Obituary for Eugene "Gene" L. Thompson
Eugene “Gene” L. Thompson, 87, passed away at his home in Harbor, Ore. on August 18, 2015. Gene was born November 24, 1927 in Williamsville, Missouri to Walter and Minnie (Stevens) Thompson. When Gene was 4, the family moved to California. Gene worked most of his career as a saw filer in various locations across California. He also loved to race cars when he was young and was houndsman. He later moved to McCloud, Calif. where he lived until retiring and moving to Brookings in 1974. In Brookings, Gene began commercial fishing. He owned three vessels: The Sundowner, The Roughneck and The Mariah. In 2007, Gene was inducted into the Western Saw Filers Hall of Fame. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing elephant garlic and onions. Gene also loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include his daughter, Nona Myers and her husband Terry of Eagle Point; stepdaughter, Breanna Rodriguez and her husband David of Idaho; grandchildren, Rocky, Toby, Shyla, Jason, Lisa and Ace, brother, Ralph Thompson of Oroville, Calif., half-brother, Bob Myers of Oroville, Calif., and numerous extended family. Gene was preceded in death by his former wife, Lois Marie Headley, wife, Doris Thompson, sons, Gary Thompson and Michael “Shane” Thompson, stepdaughters, Joy Bailey and Jeannie Clarke, brother, Lefty Thompson, sisters, Fay and Dolores and half-brothers, Bid and John Myers. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 at the Brookings Seventh Day Adventist Church, 102 Park Ave. in Brookings. A committal service will follow at the WJ Ward Memorial Cemetery. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family
