Obituary for Ethan "Toby" Allen
Ethan “Toby” Allen Aug. 19, 1931 – Sept. 14, 2010 Ethan “Toby” Allen passed away at his home in Brookings, OR on September 14, 2010. He was 79. Toby was born August 19, 1931 in New York, NY to Ethan and Doris (Wetzel) Allen. His father was a Major League Baseball player and, due to trades, the family moved around when Toby was young. Toby earned his BA from Oberlin College in Ohio. He then entered the US Navy where he served two years, being honorably discharged at the rank of Lt. (jg) in 1955. He then attended one year at Yale School of Drama. Toby earned his Master’s from Middlerbury College in Vermont and began what would be a 33 year career in education – spending most of that as an English and drama teacher. He retired from the Emily Gray Junior High School in Tucson, AZ. Toby married Evelyn on March 24, 1978 in Tucson. They retired to Brookings in 1993 where Toby was active with the Chetco Community Public Library where he served on its Board of Directors. He enjoyed reading and working in the yard. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Brookings, Son Todd Allen, his wife, Marlen and their two daughters, Emma and Olivia, of Norway. Toby was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Lee Allen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Chetco Library, 405 Alder St., Brookings, OR 97415. A private family service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
