Obituary for Elva June Payne
Elva June Payne, 92, passed away at her home in Gold Beach on April 4, 2015, surrounded by her family. Elva was born June 11, 1922 in Mentone, Calif., one of eight children to George and Mary (Reed) Darkens. Elva served in the US Navy WAVES during WWII, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945 at the rank of Aviation Machinist’s Mate. She later attended Eugene Business College for two years. Elva moved to Gold Beach in 1955 with four children and her husband Bob Green, who was a log truck driver. They lived on the Flynn Ranch at Hunter Creek through two more births and the death of a daughter. Bob died in a plane crash in 1962. Elva worked as a secretary at Ocean View Lumber Co., then for the district attorney's office, raising her five children alone until her marriage to Lawrence Payne in 1965. They enjoyed 42 years of gardening, canning, hunting, camping, and traveling. Elva was a huge contributor to the Curry County Fair home economics division, winning many prizes for baking and sewing. She was a member of the St. Charles Altar Society, Gold Beach Quilters Guild, Gull Players, Curry County Heart Assn., and the Red Hat Society. She was well known for her lovely alto singing voice, wonderful whistle, and beautiful smile. Survivors include her children, James Russell Green (Gretchen), Theresa Anne Dickerson (Ron), Mary Kathleen Glazier (Roy), Patricia Stephanie Green (Ward Monroe), Stephen Michael Green, all of Oregon, step-children, Pete Payne of Brookings, Ore. and Betty Netcher of Gold Beach, Ore. Elva was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Ira, Leslie, and Nelson Darkens, sisters, Mable Henderson, Pearl Kuykendall, Nellie Rhea and Bessie Crocfer, husbands, John Robert Green and Lawrence L. Payne, daughter, Roberta Gale Green and stepson, Ken Payne. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Friday, April 17, 2015 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 94323 Gauntlett St. in Gold Beach. A luncheon reception will follow there. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
