Obituary for Edwin Edward "Peat" Dougherty
Edwin Edward “Peat” Dougherty passed away at his home in Brookings, Oregon on March 7, 2015. Peat was born March 12, 1936 in Buffalo, Oklahoma to Chester and Helen (Knight) Dougherty. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and spent most of his career in the aerospace industry, designing solid rocket fuels for the NASA Gemini and Titan missile programs, and the Apollo missions which culminated in the 1969 lunar landing. While working for the Air Force as a Chief Industrial Engineer, he received multiple Civil Engineering Manager of the Year Awards and the Strategic Air Command Outstanding Service Award. He also served on a federal committee to craft the Americans with Disabilities Act. Peat married Darlene G. Doyle in Orangevale, California on December 30, 1955. They moved to Meadow Vista, California where they lived until retiring to Brookings in 1990. Peat was an avid San Francisco 49er’s fan, an accomplished fisherman, wood sculptor, and gardener. Peat is survived by his wife of 59 years, Darlene Dougherty, daughters Sheryllyn Dougherty, Sandi Bumpus, and Cynthia Fiedler; grandchildren, Matthew Halden, Michelle Bolotin, Aubrey Bumpus, Marinda Halden, Kristopher Bumpus, Aundria Mazoros, Erinn Fiedler, Madeline Fiedler, and Brendan Fiedler, and great-granddaughter, Sequoia Bumpus, and sons-in-law David Mulford, Daniel Silva, and Bruce Fiedler. Peat was preceded in death by his brothers, Leon and Elmore Dougherty and sister, Elnora Bennings. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Rd., Portland, OR 97201 or Coastal Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 493, Gold Beach, OR 97444. Viewing will be from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Friday, March 13 at the Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield Street, Brookings, with a memorial service on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held following a family graveside service at the Tea Room, 434 Redwood Street, Brookings.
