Obituary for Edmund Joseph McQuade
Edmund Joseph McQuade, 91, passed away after a brief illness at his home in Port Orford, Ore., on Oct. 8, 2014. His wife of 51 years, Ellie, predeceased him in 1994. He is survived by his sisters Carol Pfefferle and Veronica Cooney, both of New Jersey; son Brian and his wife Christie of Ashland, Ore.; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his domestic partner of 20 years Marie Hammond and her family. Ed served as a radioman in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and subsequently graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in electrical engineering, and pursued many business/career opportunities during his working years. He retired from Vista, Calif., in the late 1980s to Gold Beach, and later to Port Orford, where he loved fishing and playing golf. He also enjoyed serving on the Port Orford Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Library Board, and served as a volunteer with Cedar Bend Golf Course. If there was a community project that needed leadership and energy from a group of local volunteers, Ed’s name was often on that list. He was recognized often for those efforts. He led by the example of “Never make a promise you can’t keep.” The family would like to thank Ed’s domestic partner, Marie, and her children, as well as the many care providers and Hospice staff for their support during his illness. At Ed and Ellie’s request, they will be laid to rest in the Eternal Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Oceanside, Calif. at a later date. Anyone wishing to make a donation in his honor may do so to the Cancer Research Institute, www.cancerresearch.org. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
