Obituary for Doris McVay

Longtime Harbor Resident, Doris McVay, 92, passed away at her home on Tuesday, June 25th, surrounded by family members. Doris was born on December 17, 1920 on the plains of Alberta, Canada, to Roy and Agnes (Cameron) Drake. She was one of nine girls. The Drake family immigrated to Oregon in the late 1920’s. In 1933 they relocated to the Winchuck River area. Doris met Archie McVay while attending junior high school in Brookings. They were married April 29, 1946, after Archie’s war time service. Together they raised seven children on a dairy farm where the present day commercial boat basin at the Port of Brookings is located. They built and moved into their home overlooking the Port and the mouth of the Chetco River in 1967. Doris was a founding member and first President of the Chetco Valley Historical Society. She enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening, and was an avid reader. She was a fabulous cook and was known to can, freeze or dry anything that grew, swam or was brought home from a hunting trip! She thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings and BBQ’s! She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Archie, and their children Sidney, Rocky, Dawn, Pat, Mike, Molly and Mary and their spouses, and by Rollie Jefferies who was loved as a son. Also surviving are twenty-nine grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Vera Hodgin, of Marshfield, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service is planned for Wednesday July 3rd at 3:00 p.m. at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery, 1035 7th Street, Brookings. Our Mother was passionate about the history of this area, and was instrumental in maintaining the Chetco Valley Museum. It would be her wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Chetco Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 2004, Harbor, OR 97415. Condolences may be expressed at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
