Obituary for Dolores Marie Ross
Dolores Marie Ross, 90 1/2 years young, of Brookings, was taken from us on February 3, 2015. She had loved ones by her side. Dolores was born in Willow Springs, Ill. on June 24, 1924 to William and Louise Frink. They moved around some; Dolores’ father passed away when she was 11. His death made it necessary for her, her brother and sister to find work to help their mother. The next few years were tough for the family – aside from having to work, Dolores was determined to go to school. She attended Cook County Elementary School in Illinois. She went on to complete 16 achievement courses and graduated at the age of 16. The family moved to San Francisco where she began working in the shipyards and mills. In 1947, Dolores met Eugene Henry Ross – they fell in love right away and were married on Aug. 30, 1947 in San Mateo, Calif. Dolores gave birth to their first child, Kathryn, shortly after moving to Mountain View, Calif. It was there that Gene and Dolores purchased their first home. She also became active in the Lutheran Church there. Dolores enjoyed having family and friends over, camping and fishing. She worked part time at Sears and Roebuck Co until Aug. 23, 1953 when she gave birth to their second child, Jacklyn. Dolores was a stay-at-home mom after that but was also involved with charity work. Aug. 26, 1958 brought the birth of third child, Patricia “Shorty”. Dolores became more involved with her girls’ projects including Girl Scout campouts. Dolores and Gene always gave their everything for the girls. In 1966, the family moved to Tahoe City, Nev. in 1969, they moved to Manteca, Calif. Dolores was active with her church there and began collecting dolls. They moved to Brookings, Ore. in 1992. Dolores’ doll collection had grown to over 500 including many clowns. They were involved in the community here until Gene’s illness in 2007. At that time, their youngest daughter, Patricia, moved to Brookings to help care for Gene. He lost his battle with Alzheimer’s on October 5, 2012. Dolores and Gene were inseparable for 65 years to that point. After Gene’s death, her health continued to decline until February 3 of this year when Gene held out his hand to be together again, forever. Dolores will be missed terribly. She was always loved for her gentle smile and touch; she will never be forgotten. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Juan Meza of Harbor, Ore., daughters, Jackie Ross of Modesto, Calif., Patricia “Shorty” Ross of Brookings, four grandchildren, grandchildren, Rodney Galindo, Shane Ross, both of Modesto, Cindy Wooley of Texas, Samantha Archer of Manteca, Calif.; great grandchildren, Jonathan and Justin Wooley of Texas, James and Dale Cooper of Manteca, Kody Ross of Modesto, Savannah McBroom of Manteca, and Bree Charbeneaux of Stockton; great-great grandchild Julian Jimenez of Stockton. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1200 Easy Street in Brookings. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
