Obituary for Deroy Dean Beeney
Deroy Dean Beeney May 22, 1929 - December 18, 2015
Deroy Dean Beeney of Brookings-Harbor was 86 years old when he went to be with his Savior on December 18th, 2015, with his loving sister, Marilyn, sitting beside him holding his hand.
Deroy was born May 22nd, 1929 in Mason City, IA, to Carl and Hazel (Hedemark) Beeney. Deroy attended school in Sioux City, IA through the 10th grade and completed high school in Long Beach, CA.
Deroy served in the US Air Force and was deployed to Korea in July of 1949 through July of 1952. He received the Korean S V Medal and three Bronze Stars.
Deroy married the love of his life, Beverly Claire Showalter, November 28th, 1952, in Riverside, CA. The two made their home in Long Beach with their two children, where Deroy was a Postal carrier for thirty years. After retirement from the Post Office, they moved to Pistol River, Oregon, and later moved to Brookings in 1986.
Deroy and Bev enjoyed together their times of travel and taking cruises.
After their move to Brookings, Deroy developed his talents as an artist, photographer and gardener. He often shared his work in the Chetco Pharmacy photo department and was always available at his church to take directory photos, wedding photos, Christmas program photos and so much more. He was a devoted Sunday School teacher, and was also known as the “hugger”. He was willing to hug anyone that was close, and he never let go first.
One of Deroy’s other talents was to make “Mustard”. He was known as the Mystic Mustard Man in all of Curry County and beyond.
Deroy is survived by his sister, Marilyn Hewitt of Seal Beach, CA; sister Ilene Howe of Eugene, OR and a brother Rick Beeney (Susan) of Long Beach, CA; son Michael Beeney (Janeal) of Leonard Town, MD; daughter Pamela Susan Beeney of FL; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and –nephews.
Deroy was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Hazel Beeney, step-father Samuel Beeney and wife Beverly Beeney.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Sound Room (new hearing system), P.O. Box 1199, Brookings, OR 97415 or to a Charity of your own choosing.
A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1600 Easy St., Brookings, on Sunday, December 27th, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Pastor Richard Gunderson will officiate. A reception will follow the service.
Inurnment will take place at Tharp’s Grove Cemetery in Craig, MO at a later date.
Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.
