Dennis G. Shannon, 66, passed away at his home in Gold Beach, Ore. surrounded by his family on June 4, 2015. Dennis was born December 22, 1948 in Salinas, Calif. to Frederick and Laura (Roybal) Shannon. At the age of 20, Dennis enlisted in the US Army where he served honorably in Vietnam. Among his military commendations was the Purple Heart, which he earned after stepping on a land mine. Most of his career was spent in law enforcement, including 18 years with the Curry County Sheriff’s Office. He retired in 2012. Dennis married Andrea in Gold Beach on August 23, 2008. They enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time with family. Dennis also had a fondness for classic cars and writing poetry. He was also active in the Vietnam Veterans of America and was currently the local chapter #757 president. He had a heart of grace and courage – he loved his family and was especially proud of his son’s military service in Iraq, his daughter’s marriage and the birth of his grandchild. Dennis will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Andrea of Gold Beach; daughter, Heather Valdovinos of Parker, Colo., son, Garrett Shannon of Gold Beach, stepdaughter, Kendra Stone of Gold Beach, “honorary daughter”, Alyssa Stalcup of Gold Beach, brothers, Don Mortensen of Portland, Ore., Douglas Dischner of Fountain Valley, Calif., sister, Sheryl Richardson of Wilsonville, Ore., one grandchild and one “on the way.” Dennis was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Mortensen. A memorial service was held on June 6, 2015. Redwood Memorial Chapel assisted the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
