Obituary for David Thomas Alexander
David Thomas Alexander, 61, died at home in Gold Beach. He was born in Portland, the son of Dean and Barbara (Davis) Alexander. He attended All Saints School and Grant High School. David was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and fulfilled his alternative service obligation working with the homeless and drug-affected in Old Town Portland. David met Linda Jean Golden in Portland. They were married Aug. 18, 1990, in McMinnville. Members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, they delightedly celebrated their 20th anniversary with a Medieval renewal of vows in August. David earned a degree in community relations and psychology from Chico State College. He worked as a crisis interventionist for the City of Portland and as a service technician for Ramcell Co. on the Southern Oregon coast. He served on the boards of directors of the Oasis Shelter and the South Coast Community Resource Center in Gold Beach. He was a city council member in Gold Beach for six years. David was an accomplished guitarist, singer and songwriter and an avid reader of Sci-Fi and mysteries. His favorite hobby was flying stunt kites on the beach. David was admired for living the values he esteemed, those of pacifism, honor and tolerance. He was dearly loved for his sense of humor and gentle nature. He is survived by his wife, Linda Alexander of Gold Beach; sisters, Michelle Alexander of Portland, and Roshana Shockley and Adrienne Schouten of McMinnville; brother, Michael Alexander of Bandon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment was held March 16, 2011, in Gethsemane Cemetery, Portland, and was attended by close family members.
