Obituary for Darold Carlin
Darold I. Carlin passed away at his Harbor home on December 27, 2012. He was 83. Darold was born March 4, 1929 in Denver, Colo. to Adrian and Florence (Burke) Carlin. He entered the US Navy shortly after high school and served aboard ship during the Korean Conflict. Following an honorable discharge, Darold began civilian work as a civil engineer for the US Air Force. During his career he worked at several different Air Force Bases in California including Wright Patterson, Edwards AFB and McChord AFB. It was while working at Edwards that Darold had a part in the development of the space shuttle. He married Evelyn Boyle on May 24, 1962 in Fort Bragg, Calif. They lived in California until moving to Brookings in 1990. Evelyn preceded him in death in 2002 after 40 years of marriage. Two years later, while at a singles gathering at Ship-A-Shore, Darold met who would become his second wife: Nancy Price. Darold loved being by the ocean, fishing and reading books, especially Louis L’Amour. He also enjoyed doing different types of puzzles and collected antiques. Darold was a member at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and member and past president of NARFE, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Price of Harbor, daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Chuck Messerli of Grants Pass, Lisa and Joe Wolfe of Gallatin, Tenn., grandchildren, Courtney Grates and her husband, Rob of Phoenix, Ariz., Ferrin Messerli of Grants Pass, Amber Sims and Ryan Sims of Fair Oaks, Calif., sister, Darlene Lewis of Grants Pass, nieces, Katie, Bridget and Becci. Darold was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Pico, Jr. A memorial service was held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. Following cremation, Darold will be buried in the ocean in which he loved.
