Obituary for Cleo Sloan
Cleo Sloan, of Gold Beach, passed away on Friday, September 21st at her daughter’s home in Medford, OR. She joins her recently deceased husband, Owen, and daughter, Nancy, in Heaven. Cleo was born on February 7, 1921 to Andrew and Alpha Hensley in Oneida, KY. She spent most of her youth living on a farm in Clay County with her three brothers. In 1939 she married Raymond Earl Cash and together they had two daughters, Linda and Nancy. They moved to the west coast in 1947. In 1958, the family moved to Gold Beach and shortly thereafter, Raymond was killed in a logging truck accident. Cleo married Owen Sloan on July 7th, 1960 and they shared 52 wonderful years together in their beloved Gold Beach. She was active in her community, both as a businesswoman and civic member. She and Owen bought the old dry cleaner building on hwy 101, extensively remodeled it and opened the “Pelican’s Pouch,” a gift shop and art gallery. She enjoyed beachcombing and creating unique driftwood sculptures. Cleo loved her community and actively participated in many different organizations. She volunteered with the hospital auxiliary blood drives until she was 90 years of age. One of her favorite projects to support was the annual hospice rummage sale. Years ago, she was instrumental in bringing the community concert series to Gold Beach. Cleo was an active member of the Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. Cleo had many hobbies and interests. She was an exceptional quilter, who won many awards for her beautiful quilts. She delighted in helping her young grandchildren enter baked goods in the county fair. Cleo could bring any neglected plant back to life with her extraordinary green thumb. The Portland Trailblazers lost a loyal fan. Her family and friends in Gold Beach, were greatly treasured. She was especially grateful for the outpouring of love and support, through calls, cards, dinners and visits, while she struggled with her illness and with the loss of Owen. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ken Wion of Medford; grandchildren, Keri Papé and husband, Jordan, Jessica Leach and husband, Andrew, and Christopher Brueckner. Great grandchildren: Braden, Madeline and Eleanor Papé. Cleo was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Raymond Cash and Owen Sloan, her daughter, Nancy Cash Brueckner, brothers, Junior, Benjamin, and Boone Hensley.
