Obituary for Charles William Stanton
Charles W. Stanton, 73, of Brookings, was born July 26, 1938 to Wanda Butler Stanton and Charles A. Stanton in Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1956 he moved with his family to Bakersfield, CA. He served in the National Guard during the Watts Riots. He spent his entire career in the printing industry, starting with his apprenticeship at the local Bakersfield newspaper. He moved to Sacramento, CA where he worked at the Office of State Printing in various capacities, retiring as a supervisor after 30 years. He was a “people person” and enjoyed many hobbies that involved part time sales including garage sales and gardening. He married Audi Hill on August 17, 1985 in Sacramento, CA where they lived until they moved to Brookings, Oregon in 2000. There he “enjoyed playing in the dirt”, becoming an active member of Curry County Master Gardeners. Charles served as their president for a year, newsletter editor for 5 years, and was instrumental in starting the Coastal Garden & Art Tour held annually. He was named “Master Gardener of the Year” for both 2010 and 2011. Survivors include his wife, Audi, son Charles Blake Stanton, daughter Kelley Denise Stanton, son William Patrick Stanton, grandchildren Morgan Leigh and Charles Patrick of Bakersfield; Stepdaughters and their families: Jennifer Blevins, Katie Kraynak and Robin Dowler, also of CA; his sisters Barbara Olds, Helen Ferguson, Bonnie Giltner and brother Jerry Holden, many cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to: Curry County Master Gardeners Association, P.O. Box 488, Gold Beach, OR 97444. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Church of the Nazarene, 1600 Chetco Avenue, Brookings. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bakersfield, CA at a later date.
