Obituary for Carol J. Smith
Carol J. Smith, 77, of Brookings, passed away on December 14, 2013. Carol was born August 16, 1936 in Albee, South Dakota to Leonard and Iris (Ahlstrom) Syrstad. On September 27, 1958, she married Kenneth L. Smith in Montebello, Calif. They lived there briefly before moving to Covina, and then later to San Dimas, Calif. Carol spent 23 years in the food service department of the Covina Valley Unified School District, retiring as Food Services Manager. She and Kenneth moved north to Smith River following retirement, and then to Brookings in 2004. Carol enjoyed reading and crocheting and was a member of Daughters of the Nile. As Ken was an active member of the Shriner’s, Carol also enjoyed spending time with Shriner’s wives. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Ken of Brookings, sons Jeff Smith of Smith River, Calif., Randy Smith, his wife Whitney and their daughters Katie and Alaina of Mitchell, Ind., daughter, Cheryl Gonzales and her daughters, Kristina and Dana of Evansville, Ind., brothers, Sonny Syrstad and his wife Carol of Crescent City, Calif., Roger Syrstad of Glenwood, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews including Tim Syrstad and his wife, Teresa of Seattle, Wash. and Suzi Syrstad of Crescent City, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St. in Brookings. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Masonic Section at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery in Brookings. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
