Obituary for Betty Jane Baker
Longtime Brookings resident Betty Jane Baker, 76, passed away at her home in Brookings on May 24, 2014. Betty was born June 15, 1937 in Oakland, Calif., one of thirteen children to Thomas and Grace (Mitchell) Lawless. She grew up in Grants Pass. On August 10, 1953, Betty married John Caroll Baker in Grants Pass, Ore. They moved to Brookings in 1968. Mostly a homemaker, Betty spent a few years working outside the home as in a local grocery store and doing fire watch in the summer. She was an avid bowler and loved taking trips to Reno. In recent years, Betty knitted hats to be donated to local new-born babies. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Charlene Baker of Prospect, Ohio, John and Jeanne Baker of Sam’s Valley, Ore., daughter, Pam Baker of Forest Grove, Ore., grandchildren, Melissa, Nicole, Randy, Michael, Johnny, Jennifer, Joe, JR and Teresa, 21 great grandchildren, brothers, Lewis and Everett, sisters, Iva, Barbara and Melissa, sisters-in-law, Eleene Coonce and Beverly Lawless, and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1998, brothers, Earl, Harold and Robert and sisters, Donna, Ruby, Marian and Bessie. Memorial contributions may be made to Sutter Coast Home Care, 800 E. Washington Blvd., Crescent City, CA 95531. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
