Obituary for Barbara A. Turk
Barbara A. Turk passed away peacefully in Brookings on Dec. 8, 2013. She was 79. Barbara was born Nov. 13, 1934 in Lyons, Colo. She was adopted by Zelven and Mabel Patterson when she was 2 years old. In her youth, Barbara loved all sports, and played many of them in high school. She went to college in southern California to become a teacher. Shortly after, she got a job teaching kindergarten and first grade in Trail, Ore., where she taught for 20 years. Barbara married Jack Turk on Sept. 14, 1976 in Eagle Point, Ore. They moved to Eureka, where Barbara worked as a floor lady for many years at the Eureka fishery. After surviving a battle with breast cancer, Barbara and Jack moved to Brookings, where they spent the remainder of their time together out in the woods hiking and picking brush and mushrooms, until Jack passed away in 2008. Barbara was a social butterfly who loved to talk, and enjoyed visiting the senior center. In 2010 she moved to Seaview Senior Living, which she enjoyed very much, and happily lived out the rest of her years there. Barbara is survived by her three step-children, Leanna Hopkins, Stan Turk, and Kimberly Omara; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Jack Turk. A funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 15, 12 p.m., at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield Street in Brookings. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
