Obituary for Avis Isabel Grimes

Avis Isabel Grimes Oct. 30, 1916 - April 26, 2010 Avis Isabel Grimes was born October 30, 1916 in Gilbert, AZ to Arthur Wakefield Ayers and Iva Louise (Stall) Ayers and passed into her Lord's presence on April 26, 2010 in Gold Beach, OR. Avis lived in Arizona as a child before moving to Central Point, OR at the age of eleven. She graduated from Southern Oregon Normal School (now Southern Oregon University) and taught school for three years prior to her marriage to her high school sweetheart, William "Bill" Grimes, on July 30, 1939. She continued to teach full time for another three years and then worked in Klamath County as a substitute teacher while her children were young. She then became a full time homemaker and devoted her time to raising her two boys. Avis enjoyed working with young people at Bible Baptist Church in Klamath Falls. She taught Sunday school and was a youth group sponsor with her husband. She also served as a deaconess there. She was later a member of the First Baptist Church in Gold Beach. Following Bill's retirement in 1981, the couple built a home in Gold Beach. Avis was an avid reader and like to embroider. She was actively involved in the music at Bible Baptist. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survivors include her sons, David Grimes and his wife, Sherrill of Gresham, OR, Daniel Grimes and his wife, Georgia Lee of Florence, brother and sister-in-law, Delbert and Marguerite Ayers of Hillsboro, OR, sisters and brothers-in-law, Nelda Jean Helen and John Tharp of Vancouver, WA and Mary Maxine and "Zip" Zimmerman of Seattle, WA, five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 2009. Memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church of Gold Beach, PO Box 850, Gold Beach, OR 97444. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Gold Beach. Private interment was at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
