Arlena was born May 1, 1919 in Lincoln, England to Paul and Olive (Bell) Bryn. She came to the US with her family at the age of 2 months settling in Aloha, WA. She grew up and attended school there. Following high school, Arlena attended the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, OR where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. She married the love of her life, Earl "Baldy" Hall, on November 1, 1941 in Hoquiam, WA. They moved to Gold Beach in 1952. Arlena began work as an occupational nurse for US Plywood. Later working for Curry General Hospital, until retiring as Director of Nursing in 1977 following Baldy's death. Affectionately known as "everyone's mother", Arlena was very active in the Gold Beach community. She served on the PTA, was an member of the Eagles Auxiliary, Soroptimist Club, St Matthew's Episcopal Church Guild, and later volunteering at the hospital. She also played the fife with the Gold Beach women's drum and bugle corps, traveling all over the west coast to play for parades and fairs. They even received an invitation to march in the Rose Festival Parade in Portland. Arlena also partnered with Jan Buffington and opened Treeanon, a women's boutique in Gold Beach. She moved to Portland in 2003 to be near family. Arlena's acceptance, empathy and compassion for others was a gift. She made you feel welcome. She was always happy and her laugh was contagious. The world is indeed a better place because Arlena was here. We have lost a treasure. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Sandra Hall of Portland, Dennis and Anneliese Hall of Las Vegas, NV, daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bill McLean of Portland, grandchildren, Zachary Hall, Bryan McLean, his wife, Ginna and their children, Mason and Quinn, Colin McLean, Vanessa Hall and Alexandra Hall, brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Vernita Bryn of San Luis Obispo, CA.
