Obituary for Albert W. Cannard
Albert W. Cannard Feb. 7, 1927 - Mar. 2, 2010 Albert W. Cannard died at a care facility in Coos Bay on Tues., March 2, 2010. He was 83. Albert was born February 7, 1927 in Portland, OR to Albert and Grace (Gillis) Cannard. He grew up there and attended school until he had to go to work to help the family during the Depression. After serving one year with the Merchant Marines, Albert was drafted into the US Army where he served honorably for three years during the Korean War. Following his service, Albert worked in various vocations before becoming a commercial fisherman aboard The Lovely. Albert married Louise Franklin, whom he met while she was recovering from surgery at his boss's home, on April 12, 1958. They moved to Harbor from Portland in 1969. Albert then began work as a lumber inspector with South Coast Lumber; he would work there for over 17 years before retiring. Albert enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on cars. He also had built a ski boat and was a pilot and partner in a Piper Pacer. He was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church and was instrumental in bringing St. Vincent de Paul to Brookings. He also served as president of St. Vincent de Paul. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Louise of Harbor, son, James Cannard and his wife, Kelly of Ferndale, WA, daughter, Teresa Pine and her husband, Larry of Brookings, Anna Clary and her husband, Marty of Brookings, Pamela Nearpass and her husband, James of Hamilton, MT, son, Albert Cannard and his wife, Tammy, currently stationed in Okinahwa, Japan, brothers, William Cannard and his wife, Joan of Eugene, sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Dave Swaja of Banks, OR, Janet and Neltson McPhearson of Portland, sister-in-law, Betty Cannard of Portland, OR, fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Albert was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathrine Grace Cannard, sisters, Violet Bowen, May Arnett, brothers, Cecil Cannard, Raymond Cannard, grandson, Brian Cannard and great grandson, Brian Banfield, II. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at noon at Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph Bosch will be the celebrant. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will precede the Mass at 11:30am. A luncheon will follow the Mass in the Parish Hall. Private cremation and inurnment will be held.
