Obituary for Agnes E. "Betty" Hall
Agnes E. “Betty” Hall, 94, of Brookings, passed away from a stroke in Gold Beach, Ore. on December 25, 2014. Betty was born into a pioneer family on May 21, 1920 in Waldport, Ore. , the youngest of six children to William and Maud (Cauthorn) Keady. Betty met Cecil while in high school; they married on July 3, 1940 in Waldport, Ore. They had four children, Nixon C. Hall (Margaret) of Klamath, Calif., Susan Hall Ross (Mike) of Redmond, Ore., Alan Hall Keady (Barbara) of Point Reyes, Calif., Kathy Lindley Hall of Brookings. Cecil began fishing commercially during World War II – fishing out of the Columbia River while living in Warrenton. In 1952, they moved back to Medford while Cecil’s partner ran their boat: the Albert H. Cecil and Betty would live in Medford, Newport, and Warrenton, before settling in Brookings in 1960 where Cecil was one of the original fisherman out of the Port of Brookings. His boat, the Panda, was one of the first boats to enter the new Brookings harbor in 1972. Betty was a charter member of the Brookings Commercial Fisherman’s Wives Association – officially formed in 1968. During her time with the Association, she was very active politically building shore side support for the local commercial fishing industry and the Coast Guard Air Station installations. She was also involved in a western state coalition that garnered support from the Nixon Administration to expand the 3 mile limit to the 200-mile commercial fishing limitation. Betty was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She didn’t learn to drive until she was 48 years old. Following the death of her husband, she moved to a retirement home in Grants Pass. She loved her time there. As her health declined earlier this year, though, she decided to return to be near family in Brookings. Betty loved gardening, reading and was an avid card player. She also greatly cherished time spent with her family- especially when they would visit on her birthday. Survivors include her children, Nixon C. Hall (Margaret) of Klamath, Calif., Susan Hall Ross (Mike) of Redmond, Ore., Alan Hall Keady (Barbara) of Point Reyes, Calif., Kathy Lindley Hall of Brookings, nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, three grandchildren and one great grandchild preceded Betty in death. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 1237, Brookings, OR 97415. A celebration of life will be held in the spring. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
