Obituary for Patricia Jane Riddle
Patricia Jane Riddle passed away on April 9, 2018 after a battle with bone cancer, surrounded by family and friends. Pat lived in Brookings for 23 years, mostly along the North bank of the Chetco River.

Pat was born the baby in a family of ten children in Portsmouth Iowa. After her father passed away in 1945, the family headed west. They loaded up several cars and landed in Inglewood, California. The family of 11 bought a 2-bedroom home and relegated the oldest 5 (all boys) to the garage. The younger 5 (all girls) shared 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom with mother and the boys. Mother Ann worked at May Company in downtown Los Angeles to support her family. Everyone chipped in, no matter their age.

Growing up in the time of bee hives and bobbi socks, the Reinig clan began getting married and started their own families. Pat landed her dream job at Getty Oil ag the age or 18, doing secretarial work. She eventually moved into Human Resources where she worked for 25 years.

When Getty was purchased by Texaco, Pat decided it was time to move on. She took computer classes and got a job at Ablestik adhesives. After ten years there she moved North to Oregon where her husband and son purchased a small country store. With her work ethic and financial discipline, Pat made that too into a successful endeavor. She’s always been the rock in her family’s foundation, and an example of strength and determination.

Pat worked diligently as a volunteer and helped countless people in recovery through Twelve Step programs. She also worked tirelessly assisting others through tax preparation season at the Chetco Activity Center. In addition, she was an avid quilter and was “chief presser” of the Sew ‘n Sews, who donate many quilts to rest homes in our areas. She also assisted the elderly with monthly bill payments through the Volunteer program at local assisted living facilities; not to mention the endless bookkeeping, accounting and of course shuttle driving for her family business, the Riverside Market. Her favorite things to do included reading, gardening and long lunches with friends and family. She will be greatly missed by many.

Another passion of Pat’s was travelling with her sister Bette. They saw Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Iceland, Alaska, China, Tibet and Germany. Pat also went with sister Margie and nieces Sandie and Donna to Italy, France, Switzerland and England. The signts of foreign travel and adventures were dear to her heart.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband Dave in 1995; also by her mother Ann, father Jacob, sister Lois and brothers Red, Carroll, Jerry and Bob. She is survived by her son Josh, his wife Virginia and their children Brian, Stewart and his wife Jamie, and Alex; great-grandchildren Kingston, Katelynn and Scarlet; sisters Dori and her husband Buz, Bette, and Margie and her husband Del; brother Bernie and his wife Bena, and dozens of nieces and nephews, too numerous to name.

Pat requested that no service be held, and that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to your favorite charity. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
