Obituary for Marjorie Ruth Hoagland
Marjorie Hoagland passed away Sunday, June 18th. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1922. As a child she enjoyed working at the local library, visiting cousins and ice skating. She spent many happy hours at the beach every summer. While working for the telephone company in Springfield she accompanied a friend to the USO dance, where she met Jesse Hoagland. They were married six months later, driving cross country on their honeymoon and settling in Brookings, where they worked for his parents, WG and Estella Hoagland in their lily business for a short time. Jesse built their home on the banks of the Chetco River where they raised their three daughters.
Marjorie was active in the Star of the Sea Catholic church, she worked at the Curry Coastal Pilot for many years and helped raise funds for the Chetco Community Public Library.
She enjoyed her family, gardening, travel and swimming in the Chetco with friends on hot summer days. She is survived by her daughters Suzanne Ashwell, Kathleen Day, and Sylvia Montague, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the endowment fund for the Chetco community Public Library.
Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Submitted by Redwood Memorial Chapel.
